One Tank Trip to the Nature Coast, Citrus County, FL

Posted June 4th, 2010 by Cary and filed in One-Tank Trip

For this installment of One-Tank Trips is it recommended that you set your GPS or unfold the map to see the beautiful areas of Citrus County. Just North of Tampa and East of Ocala, Citrus County contains a scenic view that has made Florida a popular tourist and retirement magnet for decades.

Visitors can choose between beautiful national forests or nature preserves that have more than 40 miles of hiking trails through natural Florida scrub lands. For water lovers there are peaceful kayak and canoe trips or guided boat tours through crystal-clear, spring-fed rivers full of aquatic wonders like caverns, fish, and the winter safe harbor for some of Florida’s longest tourist, the West Indian Manatee. There are Pre-Columbian Native American mounds which tell part of Florida’s native history at the Crystal River Archaeological State Park.

Florida’s Nature Coast truly lives up to its name with beautiful nature treasures and some of Florida’s premier eco-tourism spots – Crystal River, Homasassa and Inverness. Check out the website http://www.visitcitrus.com/ for complete information.

One-tank trip to the Florida Everglades

Posted December 2nd, 2009 by Cary and filed in One-Tank Trip

Where can you go on one-tank of gas? Plenty of places around the Sunshine State! Florida is rich with history, back roads and unique destinations missed by the daily commuter. In this series of blog posts we will highlight different areas one can travel in a 150-200 mile radius from Southwest Florida, given the average car can travel 350-400 miles on one tank of gas.

I encourage you to not look at these trips with only a destination in mind. Too much of our driving is to get somewhere and we miss the joy in the journey. So, get out there and enjoy our beautiful home, Florida. Maybe you will rediscover the appeal that draws so visitors to our state each year.

One of my favorite places to visit with a round-trip tank full is the Florida Everglades. Whether you take Interstate 75, State Route 29 or U.S. 41, all points lead to the Sea of Grass. Along Tamiami Trail (south of Naples) are great places that show Florida’s history. Whether you take in the culture of the true native Floridians at the Seminole Tribe Villages, see alligator wrestling or ride in one of the Airboat Tours, you get an idea of how vast, beautiful and vital this part of Florida is to our well being. The National Park Exhibit and visiting the town of Everglades City are always great one-tank adventures. Not to mention, the seafood in Everglades City is excellent!
